Immigration Op-Ed Published
This past week my latest opinion piece on immigration reform was published in newspapers from both Binghamton and Ithaca. You can view the entire column on line here. The following is a brief section from the article.
Arizona and our other border states have been asking for help for years now, but Washington has failed to address this very real threat in any meaningful way. What Gov. Brewer and the Arizona Legislature have done is not some sort of revolt against federal authority, but a final act of frustration, if not desperation. The utter failure to act by the federal government has left them with few options. When ranchers along the border were being routinely plagued by vandalism, assault and, in some cases, murder, with little or no help in sight from the appropriate authorities, something had to be done.
It is unfortunate that opponents of these measures have chosen to frame the debate in racially charged rhetoric, depicting supporters of Arizona's actions as being somehow opposed to immigration in any form. Our country continues to be enriched by the addition of motivated, hard-working immigrants who choose to follow a legal path to citizenship, pledging their allegiance to their new nation.

Phillips Hits Hinchey on Wall Street Reform
Phillips Hits Hinchey on Wall Street Reform
George Phillips responded this week to continued claims made by Maurice Hinchey that he's fighting to reform Wall Street and the banking industry.
"My opponent is once again touting his supposedly tough stance on Wall Street and supporting a bill which puts an end to the TARP bailouts. Yet he continues to fail to address the fact that in January of 2009 he voted in favor of releasing roughly $350B in TARP funds to bail out the same people he is now criticizing.
"This type of inconsistency is far too typical of career politicians who will vote with their party leadership when they believe the voters are not paying attention, and then switch gears to pick up some votes when election time rolls around. When I am elected to Congress the voters will never need to wonder where I stand on the issues, and principles will take precedence over partisanship."

Phillips Responds to McDonald vs Chicago Ruling
George Phillips responded to this week's Supreme Court decision in the case of McDonald v. City of Chicago, which effectively struck down a broad ban on handguns in the city.
"I am pleased to express my appreciation and support of the Supreme Court decision in this case. The right to keep and bear arms is one of a handful of rights for American citizens which is clearly spelled out in our constitution. Combine with the previous finding in District of Columbia v. Heller, it has at last been clearly established that this right is fundamental to all law abiding citizens and that it is incumbent upon the states to honor this right.
"This is an issue of great importance to many residents of our district who enjoy hunting and target shooting, as well as being concerned with the erosion of the fundamental rights of citizens."

George Phillips was pleased and gratified to be recognized by former Mayor Ed Koch and New York Uprising as a Hero of Reform this week.

“I applaud George Phillips as a “Hero of Reform” for signing the New York Uprising pledge on legislative redistricting. This year voters are counting on candidates to commit to specific reforms in advance, as George has done. I look forward to working with him to see them swiftly implemented should he be elected.” —Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch, Founder, NY Uprising

Maurice Hinchey Continues to Mislead Voters on TARP Votes
Following the candidate's June 23 press conference pointing out the inaccurate information in Maurice Hinchey's last mailing and the inherently political nature of the taxpayer funded document, several news outlets covered the response from Hinchey's office.
WHCU Radio reported this response:
A spokesperson for Hinchey dismisses the accusations, saying Hinchey has always been a leader in the fight against large banks that contributed to the financial crisis.
Newschannel 34 provided a more detailed response from Hinchey's office:
A spokesman for Congressman Maurice Hinchey says Phillips remarks are patently false claims. He says Congressman Hinchey voted against the creation of the TARP bailout fund on two occasions and is leading the fight for comprehensive Wall Street reform and a breakup of big banks.
And yet the congressional record tells a very different story. True, in October of 2008 the Congressman voted against the initial TARP bill, formally known as the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. But on January 22 of 2009 the House took up the question of House Joint Resolution 3. (Follow the link for the vote record from the office of the clerk of the House of Representatives.) The description of the bill is as follows:
BILL TITLE: Relating to the disapproval of obligations under the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008
This bill was an effort by the United States Congress to block the release of the remaining Wall Street bailout funds, which totaled approximately $350B. An "Aye" vote on this measure would indicate a desire to block the release of these funds. A "Nay" vote indicated members who wanted the remaining funds released and did not favor a block on the release of the money.
Maurice Hinchey's name is recorded among the 155 Nay votes.
Why is Maurice Hinchey not only spending taxpayer dollars to send out blatantly deceptive statments about his voting record, which is readily available to the pubic, but continuing to stick to this discredited story when pressed on it by the media? Mr. Hinchey clearly voted to release well over one quarter trillion dollars of taxpayer money to bail out Wall Street, and is now spending more taxpayer cash to distribute political advertisements claiming he's fighting the banks.
What is Maurice Hinchey's position on federal bailouts for Wall Street? That's hard to say. He was against it before he was for it.

Video: George Phillips June 23 Press Conference
George Phillips held a press conference in Binghamton, New York on June 23rd. The subject of the discussion was a recent mailing sent out by Congressman Maurice Hinchey. (D-NY22) The mailer was sent out at taxpayer expense under the Mr. Hinchey's franking privilege, but was clearly political in nature and involved votes from 2008, rather than being an update on current events in Congress.
Also, the mailer included a claim that Hinchey had voted against the Wall Street bailout. (TARP) While it's true that he cast an initial vote against it in October of 2008, the congressman later cast a vote in favor releasing the second half of the TARP funds in January of 2009. Phillips called on Mr. Hinchey to explain the disparity in these votes where he was apparently against the bailout before he was for it.
Below is a video of the interview.
