Press Release on Pending Health Care Vote
Friends,
Today I sent out the following press release on the anticipated health care reform vote in Congress tomorrow.
"The House is preparing to vote on health care reform legislation this weekend, using dubious procedural tactics to force through a legislative package which will do more harm than good. This bill contains numerous new taxes and fees which will hit middle class workers just when we can afford it least. It imposes a constitutionally questionable mandate which will penalize Americans who may find themselves without health insurance. Many health care professionals have already raised concerns as to whether or not they will be able to stay in business if these changes are implemented. The alleged budget savings claimed by the bill's authors are an illusion. Once Congress adjusts the Medicare reimbursement rates later this year - as they always do - the savings disappear and this bill adds another mountain of debt on the shoulders of the next generation. And for all the clutter contained in this more than two thousand page behemoth, it still fails to address the real, needed targets of health care reform such as vigorous interstate competition in the health insurance industry and much needed tort reform which drives up costs for all of us.
"Maurice Hinchey has already stated that he plans to vote for this bill. I would urge the Congressman in the the strongest terms possible, to rethink this decision. Congress can still deliver the reform we need in the health care system, but a fresh approach is called for. This bill is not the answer, and if Maurice Hinchey votes in favor of it he will be doing a serious disservice to the residents of our district and across the nation."
Thought for the Day on Shrinking the Govt.
Something for you to consider, from a recent speech of mine:
There are probably more employees in the Department of Agriculture today than there are private, independent farmers in our nation. If you think the size of the federal government has swollen to unreasonable proportions, please click on the link in the left column to read my bold plan for America and learn about my plans to consolidate the current executive branch departments in our government. And remember, we are driving toward an ambitious fundraising goal prior to the end of the 1st quarter FEC filing deadline. Please consider helping bring about the government reform we need by making a donation to my campaign.

There's another great way to connect with other concerned citizens who feel it's time for a change in Washington, namely to send career politician Maurice Hinchey home to spend more time with his family and replace him with a new generation of real leadership. Now you can join the Friends of George Phillips Meetup Group. This was established by two of our really great supplorters, Sheryl and Randy Thomas. Keep up to date with campaign events and others who are working hard to bring George's new vision to Congress.

Friends,
As you know, I am a firm believer in pursuing the safe, effective exploration of domestic energy resources. This is a vital issue not only for job creation and our economic recovery, but for national security as well. Today I had a new editorial column on this subject published in the Binghamton Press. You may read the article online here.

Friends,
This week we found out that unemployment rates continue to rise, particularly here in New York's 22nd District. In the Broome-Tioga area alone we have reached the dismaying level of 9.7%. One thing has become abundantly clear: Washington's policies of business as usual and frenetic spending are not working. As deficits continue to hit record levels, the so-called stimulus package has failed to produce real results. And still Congress continues to battle over a health care plan which will raise taxes and fees on employers, discouraging them from hiring new workers since they have no idea what their costs will be for new hires. The recently passed jobs bill was a small step to help, but it completely fails to address the larger issue. The government needs to foster an environment where hiring is an attractive option and the opportunities for growth and prosperity are obvious. This will only come with real reform in the way Washington does business.
This is a critical year in our nation's history and the time has come for new leadership and fresh ideas. That's why it is vital that we send career tax and spend politicians like Maurice Hinchey home and replace them with people who will get down to work for the American people. If you've Had Enough this ongoing stream of bad news about our economy, please support my campaign and work with me to bring the reform we need to government.
George Phillips Calls on Charlie Rangel to Resign
Today Congressman Rangel announced that he would be stepping down from his committee chairmanship in the wake of revelations regarding his behavior and ongoing ethics concerns. Stepping down from his Chairmanship is not enough. For a Member of Congress to have made such questionable and unethical decisions regarding tax law when he is head of the Committee that oversees tax policy warrants resignation.
Also, Maurice Hinchey should speak up. In the past, when controversies have arisen involving Republicans, other members of our party have called upon them to resign. We can't have Members of Congress like Maurice Hinchey tolerating the culture of corruption when it is exposed in their own party.
