Hinchey's Top Ten List
Maurice Hinchey's Top Ten
You don't have to look very far to find examples of Maurice Hinchey acting in, shall we say, questionable ways. Here are ten examples of actions taken by Congressman Maurice Hinchey which show how out of touch he is with the people of his district and this nation.
1) Outrageous Accusations Involving Bin Laden - On national television, Maurice Hinchey repeatedly claimed that the United States intentionally allowed Osama Bin Laden to escape in order to facilitate the Iraq war. This moment lives on in the video shown here.
2) The FRAC Act - Hinchey's bill (H.R. 2766) which would bring the federal government into the middle of the natural gas drilling debate. Such a move would likely wind up delaying the process of developing valuable energy resources for several years or more. NY State already has some of the toughest environmental standards in the country and neighboring states are currently reaping the benefits of this energy exploration while New Yorkers continue to wait.
3) Iran & 9/11 Votes - Shockingly, Maruice Hinchey was one of only six Members of Congress to vote against sanctions on Iran (HR. 2194) while they are on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. He also voted against House Resolution 757, drafted to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks.
4) Utah Land Obsession - Hinchey has led a relentless push for more than 15 years to declare 9 million acres of land off limits to exploration in Utah through his Red Rock Wilderness Bill. It is estimated his bill would negatively impact and restrict access for three cities and five major roads. It would also move under federal control vast amounts of resources currently owned by the state and, in some cases, used to fund education programs.
5) Nationalizing Energy Industry - On national television, Hinchey claimed that the United States government should take over - read: "nationalize" - the oil industry. One has to wonder what country Congressman Hinchey thinks he lives in. View this astounding quote in the video clip below.
6) The Fairness Doctrine - Hinchey has lead a relentless push to silence free speech on the radio by mandating government controls through the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" as part of his Media Ownership Reform Act. Such an initiative not only infringes on free speech, but interferes with the operation of the free market in the media industry.
7) The Stimulus - With Americans gravely concerned about the staggering price and lack of effectiveness of the stimulus bill, Hinchey has actually stated he wished it spent "another trillion."
8) Health Care - Americans have expresses serious reservations about even a limited "Public Option" run by the federal government, but Maurice Hinchey continues to insist on a vast single-payer program that gives the government almost total control over the health care industry.
9) Defense Votes - Hinchey voted against funding for ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and against key Defense Authorization bills that fund thousands of jobs in our district.
10) Taxes -With our district shedding thousands of jobs and families leaving, Hinchey has continually voted for tax increases and against tax cuts, earning an "F" from the National Taxpayers' Union. Also, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce gives Maurice Hinchey a career ranking in the bottom 4% of the entire United States Congress.
