George Phillips Responds to Rising NY Unemployment

  This week we found out that unemployment rates continue to rise, particularly here in New York's 22nd District. In the Broome-Tioga area alone we have reached the dismaying level of 9.7%. One thing has become abundantly clear: Washington's policies of business as usual and frenetic spending are not working. As deficits continue to hit record levels, the so-called stimulus package has failed to produce real results. And still Congress continues to battle over a health care plan which will raise taxes and fees on employers, discouraging them from hiring new workers since they have no idea what their costs will be for new hires. The recently passed jobs bill was a small step to help, but it completely fails to address the larger issue. The government needs to foster an environment where hiring is an attractive option and the opportunities for growth and prosperity are obvious. This will only come with real reform in the way Washington does business.

This is a critical year in our nation's history and the time has come for new leadership and fresh ideas. That's why it is vital that we send career tax and spend politicians like Maurice Hinchey home and replace them with people who will get down to work for the American people.
